Eco-friendly Road Construction

Our Proven Techniques Make Road Construction More Sustainable

We use the latest methods to reduce waste and lessen builders’ impact on the environment.

Rock Solid can be an ideal partner for paving contractors, developers and government entities who want to practice eco-friendly construction. By providing an alternative to traditional methods of asphalt pavement rehabilitation that reuses as much of the existing material as possible, we make it easier for our customers to commit to environmentally friendly construction for roads. With our help, contractors and their clients can save money, reduce their environmental impact and increase their overall efficiency.

Our efforts in environmental sustainability are significant. Our industry has diverted millions of tons of asphalt and mined aggregates from landfills, contributing to a healthier planet. According to reputable sources such as the US Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Highway Administration, about 90 million tons of asphalt pavement are reclaimed annually. More than 80% of it is recycled. This helps prevent scarcity of resources and reduces the industry’s reliance on practices that can be harmful to the environment. How Can We Help Build Roads Sustainably?

As the recognized leader nationwide in road restructuring and reclamation services, we specialize in several techniques that can contribute to green road construction while saving you money. These include:

  • Asphalt Pulverization: This involves pulverizing and grinding the existing, worn-out layer of pavement along with a portion of the underlying base. Because the old asphalt does not need to be hauled away, this process can save fuel and reduce emissions for trucks and excavators. The new combined base can be graded, compacted and protected with a thin surface layer, or I salvaged as RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) for re-use later in the project as aggregate base or trench backfill.
  • Cold In-Place Recycling: During this procedure, we use a continuous train operation to mill, mix, re-pave, and roll the top 2- 5 inches of deteriorated pavement in place removing the need for new HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt). Because this can be completed in-place with existing resources, it typically results in 90% fewer greenhouse gases being released into the air caused by hauling the old aggregates. In theory, any road ready for a mill & fill is a candidate for CIR.
  • Full Depth Reclamation (FDR): Perhaps the greenest way to restore weathered roadways to date, FDR can reuse 100% of the existing road materials. After pulverizing the pavement with the underlying aggregate base and subgrade, it is mixed with additives to increase its strength and durability. It is then compacted, graded, and rolled in preparation for a thin surface overlay. Nothing is wasted, and there is a significant reduction in the number of trucks needed as well as the amount of time required versus a road removal and replacement project.

Not only do these processes allow us to recycle or reuse existing materials in place it also results in more-sustainable project, and in most cases the resulting pavement ends up being more durable. This means our processes lead to roads that are built to last while also requiring less maintenance and fewer disruptions to traffic patterns caused by frequent roadwork.
